  • Employees are More than Just Human Resources

You spend so much time at work, it's easy to think of your job like a home away from home and the people you work with like a family. It's something that a boss shares in their speeches, “these are the values that we expect from the *insert company name* family!”. And although the idea is sometimes overplayed – you wouldn't ask your boss to lend you money – you can see the similarities. There's a hierarchy in business, as there is in a family. There are bonds between members, as in a family.

And if you want a business to reflect your best qualities, then as with a family, you need to provide for those who are in it. The work environment is a direct reflection of leadership. You need to make them feel supported and not just like any individual. Yes, you do this by paying them. But you also need to make sure you are doing it with how you create an environment for them. If employees feel safe, listened to and looked after, that's when they'll provide their best work. It’s on you as a boss to make your employees happy and productive.

If you want your employees to care about the business, you have to care about them also. Employees are more than just human resources.

Employees are more than human resources

Support Your Employees In Tough Times

Some employers will tell their employees: “When you come through the door, you're representing us. Have your opinions and thoughts, but don't bring them into a work setting.”. And if that means “don't talk to customers about your divorce”, okay.

But it can't mean “it doesn't matter if you've just lost a parent” or “forget about your child's broken arm”. If employees are having tough times (https://www.crucialskills.com/2012/04/dealing-with-personal-issues-at-work-2/), treat them with understanding and support. To not do so impacts on their mental health. It's bad for them and hurts their productivity, so it's also bad for you.

Give Them A Healthy, Safe Environment In Which To Work

Employees come through the door in the morning, work, and leave in the evening. What they give to you is the volume of their work during that period. What you owe them in return is that when they go home, they feel good enough to want to come back.

Employees are more than just human resources

If the job isn't for them, then it's a clash, no harm no foul. But if the job is making them ill or aggravating an existing condition, that's something you need to address. An example would be if they have back or neck problems, and these are affected by posture. The right chairs, like ones from officechairsonly.com, will save them a lot of pain and stress. And they'll have a more positive attitude as a result.

Allow Them The Chance To Develop

It's common for people to move on from jobs as often as once every few years. The most common reason is that they feel they are stagnating where they are. But do you want to lose great people through natural wastage like this? Do you want to have to find replacements for them?

It's better for any business to allow their employees to develop and do something different. To use the skills they have gained in a different way. If this means giving them more responsibility, their own department or the chance to travel, it will help. It will also boost your business because you'll have more of a varied skill set as a whole. So if you develop your employees, they will grow the business for you.

So, by all means, the family you have at home should be your real family. But it's worth seeing that structure as something that helps your business too. Supported, healthy, engaged employees make a better business.
