As a child I KNEW I wanted to be a teacher. I loved playing school. I created lesson plans, assigned homework, and graded it too! I went all in with it!
Anything to do with learning, reading, writing, I was all in!!
That shifted when I was in high school when I was introduced to Sports Medicine, and after I found out how much teachers make. I was always interested in healthcare, so it was a natural choice for me to contine along that path.
Over the years, I’ve always taught. I served as a trainer in most corporate positions, teaching and preparing others for their job functions. Even working in my own business education was a core principle. I even worked as a teacher at a private day school for a period of time and absolutely loved working with children.
When I had my second child, I knew I wanted to homeschool her. I wasn’t thrilled with the direction that education was going in. But, when it came time for her to start school she was adamant that she wanted to go to “real school.”
Even at 4 years old, Savvi was clear in what she wanted, so I gave her that experience. Nevertheless, her school experience began with online learning as a result of COVID. Her kindergarden year she didn’t get the true school experience, but since she was doing school virtually, that gave us the freedom and flexibility to travel a lot more.
As a mom, I know my children. I knew early on that Savvi’s energy level and personality wasn’t a good fit for traditional shcool. She likes to learn by doing and experincing things. Finally, over the past year or so, we both see that’s caught up with her.
School isn’t stimulating enough. Her grades are great, but she’s not interested in the way she’s learning or what she’s learning.
Often when she comes home from school she tells me she didn’t learn anything and that alarms me.
More recently she’s been asking to be homeschooled. One reason is because she thinks she’ll just do some work online. Little does she know that her mom likes to teach and create lesson plans. I’ve had a lot of time to think about what that would look like for us and if I have the capacity to support her in that way.
After seeing her behavior and interest decline, I’ve been thinking more and more about homeschooling her. I’m definitely going to homeschool the baby too. This week while I was working on organizing my business, I also decided to create a homeschooling planner.
My intention is to let my daughter finish out her 5th grade year, and start homeschooling with 6th grade. This will allow me to prepare and for her to have a seamless transition into our new routine. I’m excited about being able to use my gifts and skills in this way.
I plan to integrate Sacred Wellness into the curriculum to create a holistic learning experience that incorporates traditional “book learning” (yes, I’m going to use textbooks!) with emotional intelligence, and life skills.
Thus, I am preparing to start my own homeschool, Sacred Wellness Academy!! While discussing my homeschooling plans with my mom, I recalled an interaction I had and shared that story with her.
Several years ago, I met the owner of Dancing Moon, THE metaphysical shop here in Raleigh where I got all my mystical, magaical goods. Cherrie has since passed, but I got to meet her one day.
I’ll never forget she told me I was supposed to be a teacher and I was going to open a school. But it wouldn’t be a regular school; I would teach children emotional intelligence and spiritual wellness. Things like meditation, EFT Tapping, journaling, and breathwork.
I shared my love of teaching and learning and how I wanted to be a teacher as a child. She said there’s always time and it’s never too late. That always stayed with me. I knew I wanted part of the work I do to help children, because they are the ones who can change the future.
Perhaps this is the start of expanding my work. As with my own journey, it always starts at home first.
Lo and behold here I am! I’m so excited to share my family’s homeschool journey with you.
I’ve started by creating a planner and task management board, and have a list of books that I’m starting to read focused on learning and homeschooling types. I also joined several local homeschooling groups, and have been bookmarking resources that I come across as well.
Here we grow!!!
