Trusting Your Own Pace When Love Ends

No matter where you are in your healing journey, let me say this: you are not wrong for taking your time.

This world tries to tell us there’s a deadline on grief, especially after heartbreak, like you ought to have snapped out of it by now.

But that’s not the way real healing ever worked for me.

Today, I want to open up about what it looks like to honor your process. The mess, wisdom, and all that comes when your heart is tender from love lost.

We Grieve More Than Death

Heartbreak isn’t just about breakups.

We grieve when friendships shift, when we lose jobs, when our identity changes, even when we step into new roles like becoming a mother.

So often people tend like to act like it’s only legit grief if someone passes away, but I’ve learned any loss can sting deep. And there’s nothing wrong about taking months, even a year or more to let someone go.

We’re human.

Our feelings are complex, our memories are sticky, and sometimes what lingers isn’t just the person, but the pieces of ourselves we gave away.

So if you’re in a chapter where moving on feels like molasses, trust that you aren’t broken.

You’re healing, and that is sacred work.

My Own Lessons From Letting Go

Lord knows, I’ve been there. There was someone I cared for since I was a teenager, a connection that held on way past its expiration date.

Sometimes friendship can get tangled up in betrayal, and love in manipulation.

Even knowing all the facts, my heart took its own slow time letting go. I stayed, forgave, and cycled through every emotion because that’s what I knew how to do then.

Eventually, I had to get real with myself about what I was getting back in return for all my energy. Was this love building me up, or just making me smaller? Facing those questions was painful, but that honesty opened the door to true healing.

I’ve learned to give heartbreak a container.

You have to let those emotions move somewhere besides your spirit.

Sometimes I wrote letters I never intended to send, pouring out every unsaid word. Burning those letters or ripping them up became alchemy for my heart and soul.

Transformation in the ashes, a sign that I was ready to stop carrying old hurts. If the urge to reach back out still lingered, instead of acting, I would pour it all onto paper, or surrender it to my art journal.

Somatic practices helped too.

When my body was tight with sadness, I’d let myself move, cry, or even just breathe through it intentionally. I would hold my own heart like I would for a dear friend.

Sometimes you need to sit in the discomfort, but you never have to do it alone. If it feels too heavy, that’s what therapists, coaches, friends, and spiritual circles are for.

Letting Truth Override Fantasy

Sometimes the hardest part is facing the real story, not the fantasy.

Was the love mutual?
Were my needs met?
What did I truly receive from this connection: joy, support, peace, or mostly anxiety and isolation?

When I started looking at my own patterns, not judging but simply noticing, that clarity became its own medicine.

Let yourself become objective. Ask: Is this person an asset or a liability in my life?

When you love hard, it doesn’t always mean that love has been good for you. That reality check takes courage, but it’s the beginning of returning to yourself.

Gathering Your Pieces and Moving On

At some point, even if it sneaks up gently, disgust sets in.

Not disgust for them, not shame for loving, but a deep clarity that you are worth so much more. That’s when the energy starts swinging back into your own court.

The day comes when you stop replaying the what-ifs and start reclaiming your joy.

This is when you start pouring the love you once gave to them into yourself.

Even small things; a walk in nature, picking up an old hobby, surrounding yourself with beautiful things. Begin to stitch your heart back together.

Let yourself be curious about where your own happiness lives now.

Integration: Invite Yourself Back Home

Take a moment to check in today.

What truth are you avoiding?
Where does your heart still ache, and what would soothe it just a little?

You do not have to rush.
You do not have to perform healing for anyone.

If you’re feeling raw, create a gentle ritual of your own. It could be a letter, a bath, a breath of fresh air, even five minutes of art-making.

Let that energy start to move.

If you need support, seek it. Join a group, call a friend, or if you feel called reach out to me. No stage of your healing process is shameful. The way you care, feel, and heal is uniquely yours and beautifully human.

You are allowed to take your time.

In fact, sometimes that’s the most loving, powerful thing you can do for yourself.

Healing is spiral in nature. It’s not a straight path.
One day you’ll look back and see how far you’ve come, feeling softer, stronger, and so much wiser.

Take your time, love on yourself along the way. You’re right where you’re supposed to be.
